Apple- Mobile phones?

Tags: , , , , , , , ,

Now this is one of the hottest topics across the . Of course, I wanted to comment on the same.

Apple inspires dedicated websites for itself- almost a halo status for itself- never mind the fact that it routinely screws up.

In a way, Apple and Motorola had a pact to develop iPod look alike phone. It was widely reported in End Gadget and Apple fan sites that such a telephone is under development. However, instead of Apple setting up it’s own network, it hoped to piggy back on the existing phone networks. This way it could have avoided the duplication costs.

Most of the commentators were fuming and foaming at their mouths about the “virtual operator business model”. This was reported in The Forbes. Some columnists trashed the idea that such a model could ever be viable.

I believe that it is more to do with the convergence market that Apple is keen to tap in. With the advent of “ in the air”, it could open up another avenue for Apple to sell it’s iTunes subscription. People would appreciate the mobile phone playing back songs that they got from “the air”. Payment could be made via mobile phone gateways that are becoming increasingly popular- being marketed as the “next killer application”.

Network or no network- Apple might bundle these phones and sell them across under it’s own brand name. Whatever maybe Apple’splans- it’s too hard to comment.

Indian operators could learn a thing or two from this. has been selling its own branded cell phones manufactured by Nokia. This way it ensures steady supply of from the manufaturers and ensures Reliance gets hefty discounts- this can be reliably passed on to the end consumers.

is jumping on the bandwagon.

iPods are a rage in US and Europe. They are still to catch on the fancy of the “jet set crowd”. like these would become the next show off thingy.

Stay tuned for more on this as it happens.

This is nothing new. GSM has been "locked" in many countries ever since it existed there. As you said, this leads to discounts for the consumers, ending in a win-win situation (mostly), but there are also those that unlock these phones.

But "unlocking" won't be so easy with CDMA, since most phones don't use SIM cards at all
