India on the path of Telecom self reliance?

by Abhishek on July 11, 2005

Over the past few months, I have been following the “telecom revolution”- the talk of 100 million Indians having a telephone connection is nauseating. Why? Because it still leaves out the remaining 900 million. No small number by any means.

Frankly speaking, there is no rationale behind the numbers. I own 3 telephone connections as of now. How does that figure out in the scheme of the things?

However, never say dies attitude of one person leaves me floored. Dr.Ashok Jhunjhunwala. Single handedly he has set the ground for CorDect- a kind of wireless in local loop(WLL) connection to facilitate data transfer.

However, I still hold that real potential can only be achieved via Wireline networks. We could still find out ways and means to set up cheaper networks spanning the rural areas. The 100 million is farce. Let it grow on to more. 50+ years. Surprising the we still need to catch up in basic infrastructure areas.
