After much wrangling and phone calls including contacts et al including the all famour Indian “jugar”- I got the ugly Chinese Huawei modem blinking on my desk. One thing that I observed is that this modem tends to heat up very fast. Since I haven’t been able to check for any other modem, I wouldnt be able to comment on the same. I am sure that the forums can easily answer that query.
It made sense to have this connection on rental since outright purchase would have meant that I would be saddled with a useless piece of junk once any other service provider launches it’s services. Even though it is expensive in the long run- I would be glad to get rid of BSNL once and for all- given the choice of any other operator in my area.
The best part was to set this up on my Linux box- Suse 9.3 did an excellent job of detecting the same. I heard that BSNL has issued some kind of a manual to configure the same on Windows XP. Name anything else other than Windows and the telecom “engineers” developed cold feet. However, a bit of tweaking on the KDE desktop made the lights blink and voila- Gmail was there with all my mails.
I intend to write a final survival guide; plus given the constraints on my time I d try to update this blog as often as I can. Apologies in advance!
