For months on end, I was toying with the idea of writing on the way “Broadband” in India could redefine the way Indians could entertain themselves.
Traditionally, television and radio are the main modes. A miniscule percentage is invested in the cinemas. Much of it is lapped up eagerly- witness the boom of cable television across India. Ironically, this is one sector where the government hasn’t interfered much. Hence the explosive growth. With renewed interest, the biggies like Reliance are heading to invest in media.
However, with current limitations, we may not be able to witness the boom; where every byte uploaded or downloaded is logged in. Yet, the potential is enormous.
In this backdrop, Devanshu Datta in Business Standard talks sense. ( I must admit that few people in the mainstream media do!) He has laid out the case for unshackling the spread of broadband- and a clear cut case of opening up an entirely new medium for Indians.
TiVo is a great concept. It needs to be introduced in India; as I had earlier mentioned, Reliance maybe planning such a thing.
Ultimately, its the convergence of media that matters. While I’d like to take on the media itself headon, I believe that it would be sidetracking from the main issue at hand. Yet, there would be oblique references to the same in the future posts.
Here’s hoping for the best!
