Internet lamposts

Tags: , ,

BBC reports:

Smart lampposts that could provide high-speed access are set to go on trial in Scotland.Backers of the project plan to install six of the solar-powered, -capable lights on a rooftop at the University of Abertay. The idea will combine lampposts with solar energy and wi-fi internet access.

The lamppost will use light-emitting diode (LED) technology to provide bright light using low power derived from solar cells, which use daylight to recharge even in overcast weather.

I am definitely interested in having something like this for the rural push. Interestingly, as pointed out here it runs on solar power- this effectively minimises the environmental aspect to power such devices. In the long term, this can definitely add to the substantial savings.

More so, given the erratic rural power supply.

A request to readers here. In case you come across such information online which could power the rural countryside, please do let me know. I would be glad to put up your contribution online.

We definitely need rural push. My take is on these lines: I dont fancy converting every village into a power house, simply because the people, its culture, the habitat, the ecosystems are very fragile and even a simple change can wreck the whole pyramid. The villages do need basic amenities, and a little beyond that. Nothing beyond. People must be encouraged to move into cities if they are not content with their places of dwelling, and this must be very effective. If there is an attempt to bring the city to these people, the total balance will be lost. Not all villages are meant to become cities and not all cities were villages to start with. Our rural citizens need techology that stays fit in their daily lives and I'm sure no one has a clue about what fits this bill.

PS: I have frequented this blog a few times too many, and my warm wishes for its success. As the author, Abhishek, you've done well in bringing some topics to light.

We need rural push more than anything else! Things that you take for ganted ,Harry, are a scarcity in rural areas. Electricity, Computers, Education, Health Care, Employment et al.

More than this, the huge migration has meant that rural people are forced to turn into urban squalor.

BB is just one aspect that I am looking into. Step inside the real India and you would want to escape to your urban jungle. Such is the life there!

Sachin has hit the nail on head right on...farmers are killing themselves over high cost of pesticides, cotton seeds, debt burden (often as a high cost of health care access and loss of only earning productive member). Mobiles have no meaning anyway; either BB. I shall explore the issue in greater detail in a follow up post.

more than anything else i would push this tech, for the simple reason that our rural india will have lights :). feck broadband when these guys are killing themselves over cotton seeds costing too much.

and no offense Harry, but what makes you think there are any urban places here? no seriously, i speak for bangaloreans here, where is this urban place everyone talks about? i need to go there sometime.

rural broadband push? No offense but why's everyone esp. the sarkar so keen on the rural broadband push up?! Is our urban scene all perfect? Do we really need to think about rural broadband connectivity before we even have proper broadband in our cities?
