Reliance Broadband:Some details

by Abhishek on February 22, 2006

I have taken a liberty from self imposed hiatus here to break this news to all. From my insider sources in Reliance, it is reliably learnt that Reliance is stepping up services for Wireline and aims to go big in Broadband. Roughly in about 3 months time.

It all boils down to one thing. To challange the ultimate domination of BSNL in the Wireline space. I was told that BSNL’s refusal to open up the last mile access was going no where; plus in any case they would have opened up only those loops which are 5 years or older ones. Which are practically useless for data applications since they were never designed keeping these factors in mind.

The exact technical details elude me.

Still, it’s a good news. The roll out would be staggered. Reliance seems to be concenterating on the plum cities as for now. It has already started off it’s wireline in Chandigarh and perhaps Ludhiana in Punjab. DSL isn’t being offered but dial up is available.

A disclaimer here. 3 months is based on their internal projections. If they decide to stagger or put the plans on hold due to unforseen circumstances we might have to suffer the BIG question mark again. Reliance Broadband when?

Further, it would be copper connectivity to the last mile which means that it would be DSL. Since DSL can be scaled upto 25 Mbps, this is more than sufficient for the video applications and gaming at the moment. Of course, 100 Mbps is in a different league altogether. Forget it guys. 100 Mbps is what seems to be a magical figure. It’s like looking for a sane soul in BSNL; a needle in a haystack; a mere number for us and much like the elusive missing page in the Government’s files……

Reliance is perfectly poised for kicking BSNL right in between where it hurts them most. They would surely undercut the tariffs to scale up.

Meanwhile, Reliance seems to have cut out the idea to loan bandwidth to cable operators and mercifully, it isnt going via Sify’s way. Surely it was their waterloo.

I shall keep you posted as and when something really interesting comes up.

BSNL hasn’t responded so far to any further queries about the unlimited plans pricing. Nor there has been any activity about the CNN-IBN blog. They are in the process of setting up a CMS with remote login facility; further they seem to be fine tuning the idea about having blogs existing with the mainstream media. So for everything else, you would have to suffer Rajdeep’s outbursts for the time being.

wow! wireline in about 3 months? could this be related to BSNL possibly being forced to unbundle their local loops soon?

what about wireless (wimax)? any chances of anything happening this year? we know reliance and intel did some sort of combined thing (centrino with reliance wireless internet) about a year ago… and intel is the one for wimax… oooh the conspiracy theories in my head :-)

and i might have read here n there that some “pre-WiMAX” trials using Motorola’s “Canopy” system were done (or maybe just planned but didn’t happen).

there was a recent blog post somewhere about google plus earthlink trying to do municipal wireless with a wimax+wifi combo which involved motorola’s canopy (iirc). – http://motorola.canopywireless.com/

in any case, i cant wait for reliance to start off, hope tata/vsnl do something with all their bandwidth too :-) bsnl can sit tight, nice and complacent, in the mean time.

I need to know whether WiFi connectivity is available at High Court, Calcutta Gariahat and at Salt Lake, all within the city of Kolkata, and if avaiable, how good the connectivity is, and which service I need to subscribe to, BSNL, Tata Indicom or Airtel. I would be grateful for any help.

Y are ppl asking for tariff plans here? I thought this was a blog and not some customer service stop.

Anywho, i have a question. I recently heard about the Cisco-Reliance Wimax initiative for SMBs, Anyone knows what that is all about? I would really like to know what is happening and what the feedback on the project is from people already exposed to the plan.

hi,
i’d just got a BSNL landline with a view of getting a broadband connection soon. But, just got the SICK news that these guys have opened a new exchange at Rajakilpakkam and at present do not have any broadband ports available. Supposedly, this “Small inconvienience” will be rectified at the earliest, as per the BSNL officers at this exchange, which might take “Just” three months. As per their info, i’ll get my broadband connection soon, i.e., by JULY!

so much for improved efficiency.
SOMEBODY PLS HELP!

regards,
Ganesh

Hey
i applied for WI MAX services from reliance and they came for installation. Seems their response and services are good till now. but the installation is not over. Hopefully will be over by this week. It seems they are rolling out now only. They dont have enough work force also. they have outsourced the work to some agency (i think its webliner). Lets c how its going to be…. Friends please let me know if u know more information.

Hey guys,

Like Rajesh even I have subscribed to Reliance Wimax. They are infact promoting Wimax over the normal Broadnet connection saying that there are no ports available. I really dont care about it as long as the connectivity is fine. Will post alter once my conneciton is UP about the speed and customer service. Atleast the sales guy assured minimum 90% of the quoted data transfer speed at any time.

Hopin for the best.

Hey Guys,

I got a wimax connection from reliance. I got the connection within a week. The speed is good but the service is poor. within two weeks of connection it got disconnected from thier server twice. 1st time it got connected automatically after two days. But now its already a week. I am not able to connect it (in 2 weeks i had the connection for only 5 Days). The customer service is very poor. whenever you contact them they will give you a Service request number, but no action will be taken as there are only few people(Third Party) who are taking care of wimax connection. They are interested only in providing new connections and they are not interested in trouble shooting your problems. So guys who are going to take the new connection Beware………

These people will speak nicely till they install. after that they wont even care. if you have oppurtunuity to get a wired broadband go for it… Let wimax be your last solution (Till they have enough workforce to attend your problems).
