TRAI says no to unbundling last mile access.
This is what happens when you have an ex-telecom bureaucrat at the helm of the affairs as a “regulator”. Mr. Mishra claims that broadband can be speeded up with Wi Fi!
Mr Nripendra Misra, Chairman, TRAI, told Business Line that though the TRAI would not change its earlier recommendations urging the government to unbundle the last mile copper, the growth of the broadband segment was not dependent on it….. So we have to look at wireless technologies such as Wi-Fi for propagating broadband services.
Unbundling the last mile would enable smaller operators to ride on BSNL’s nationwide copper network to offer broadband services.
Let BSNL first introduce unlimited pricing. We would then look at this issue later.

Is it fair to assume that just because mobile phones have been monumentally successful in connecting people that the same would follow wrt to internet ?
..off the top of my head, a wi-max soln..would be subsidised by the vendor therefore provinding savings in exchange for the publicity. But then i'm betting it will be over-subscribed to the max thereby killing any effective speed that can be got. Even tho the vendor might quote speeds available in the high 3 digits of kbs, the effective speed in india will prolly be 128k or less. Want more pay more than a landline.
Net result only available in places where fixed line operators won't touch with a 10 foot pole and not threatening to their interests in areas where they do. So not really increasing competition but rather offering it in places where it was non-existant.
This can be viewed as a success or just maintaining the status quo depending on one's pov.
