TRAI: No last mile unbundling

Tags: , , , , ,

TRAI says no to unbundling last mile access.

This is what happens when you have an ex-telecom bureaucrat at the helm of the affairs as a “regulator”. Mr. Mishra claims that can be speeded up with Wi Fi!

Mr Nripendra Misra, Chairman, , told Business Line that though the would not change its earlier recommendations urging the government to unbundle the last mile copper, the growth of the broadband segment was not dependent on it….. So we have to look at technologies such as Wi-Fi for propagating broadband services.

Unbundling the last mile would enable smaller operators to ride on ’s nationwide copper network to offer broadband services.

Let BSNL first introduce . We would then look at this issue later.

Yes, i'd certainly be looking forward to that as well...

Is it fair to assume that just because mobile phones have been monumentally successful in connecting people that the same would follow wrt to internet ?

..off the top of my head, a wi-max soln..would be subsidised by the vendor therefore provinding savings in exchange for the publicity. But then i'm betting it will be over-subscribed to the max thereby killing any effective speed that can be got. Even tho the vendor might quote speeds available in the high 3 digits of kbs, the effective speed in india will prolly be 128k or less. Want more pay more than a landline.

Net result only available in places where fixed line operators won't touch with a 10 foot pole and not threatening to their interests in areas where they do. So not really increasing competition but rather offering it in places where it was non-existant.

This can be viewed as a success or just maintaining the status quo depending on one's pov.

abhishek it would be worthwhile if you write a post about why you think wimax won't be helpful for a densely populated country like India.

No Wi Fi nor WiMax. Either ways I have never supported them. Landlines remain the best bet to spread broadband or whatever version we have in India.

This is just a sign of instituionalised loosers who would settle for the "second best" options. Bah! Last mile unbundling is a policy decision and till the time media raises it, we wont get any respite from the dodos in BSNL.

That's why Department of Telecom settled in with their puppet in TRAI. The regulator has been nipped in bud and at best it's meant for "notifications" and "recommendations". No one takes them seriously.

TRAI has to take the national interest in account and not a minister's fancy ideas who wishes to protect the interests of a small minorty in BSNL.

is it even tested?

why is google and all the other companies using wi-fi in the cities of USA?

I think Wi-Max is a better and cheaper alternative in the long run.
