I am linking to Dr Rohit Dushmant’s website which details the wireless Internet access and present scenario in India. He had specifically written it for this blog; I couldnot format the tables to be published here. Any ideas how to do it?
By the way, Dr Rohit is a trainee Radiologist.

At present in India there are two major technology for Wireless Internet service apart from slower GPRS. These are Wi-Fi and Wi-Max. BSNL/MTNL are exploiting these two technologies very fast. Wi-Fi is LAN based Wireless Internet service i.e. Wireless is in some limited local area (say within 50-100 mtr. area) while Wi-Max is total Wireless service by using BTS. We can say Wi-Fi is like Cordless phone on conventional Landline telephone and Wi-max is like Cell Phone. The cost of CPE's is higher for Wi-Max technology though the Equipment cost is lower as compared to that of Wi-Fi Equipments. The companies with huge landline network like BSNL /MTNL can provide Wi-Fi service with lower CPE cost. The other companies with no landline network has to rely only on Wi-Max technologies though this tech is also upto mark.
There is further enhancement to wireless technologies i.e. 3G / IMS which are more sophisticated and costlier than Wi-Max.
