Virgin India Mobile: New service that never happened

Tags: , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , ,

Virgin Mobile was deflowered by Department of Telecom for not complying with licence norms. For those who have come late, is a virtual network operator. They tied up with and wee about to start off their services here in .

I fired an email to their PR division. Their comments came in an attachment; not a good PR strategy in my opinion. They should have sent a seperate email or should have had a logo prominently displayed.

Here is the exact copy. My comments appear in italics in paranthesis.

1) Is Virgin a Mobile Virtual Network Operator independently acting in India?
services are being offered to consumers by through a brand franchise with the Virgin Group. This means that Virgin Mobile is a brand of . This brand franchise is within the permitted norms of license agreement of (Confused statements. Nevertheless, the supposed licence agreements have been invalidated by Department of Telecom in their wisdom. The email from the PR division came in before this happened).

2) Do you have a tie up with Teleservices?

Virgin Mobile India is an equitable partnership (then what is the brand frachise?)between Virgin Group and Tata Teleservices. Virgin Mobile India will provide Tata Teleservices with experience and expertise in designing, marketing, and servicing Virgin Mobile branded products for the youth segment.

3) Who has designed your website?
Need inputs (Ha! They don’t know the name of their web designer!!! This has been prominently displayed on their home page. At first, I realised the futility of the question AFTER I had sent the email. However, even I was not prepared for their answer. Anyone with the right brains could have easily figured that out. Despite all the flash, it is choked of coding errors- a common refrain of most of the websites not designed to comply with ).

4) Why do you make service guarantees for network availability? Are you 100% sure that your network would not fail as compared to other service providers?
Virgin Mobile places huge importance on ensuring that we deliver a high quality service to customers. This philosophy pervades in everything that we do- quality of network, range of , on offer, customer care etc. We chose Tata Teleservices because we believe it has the best quality network in India (Who decides that?). According to published reports (where?), Tata Teleservices has the lowest dropped call rates and one of the lowest blocking rates in the industry(how?). This means that ‘Virgin Mobile’ branded customers will reliably be able to enjoy clear calls, a fast connection and low dropped-call rates(Low dropped call rates? Despite the network, customers would still experience call drops! Even though, they may be low by industry standards!!!).

5) Why did you choose to go ahead with Virgin?
Virgin brings extensive experience and expertise in targeting the youth market across 7 countries over the last 8 years. It is this experience, service innovation and ability to catch the pulse on the youth market that makes Virgin a perfect partner for our ‘youth’ brand.

All in all, it remains a perfect example of PR crap. Tata seriously needs a reality check. They have honest intentions; they need to tap the youth market. Their perception in the market is jaded and also ran; which is different from say . Most of the companies are aspiring for “youth tag” and hope that it would add “zing” to the company.

Why youth? They aspire for a better lifestyle and if a brand fits in their perceptions of being the “right one”, they would splurge on it. It remains true for the metros as well as the smaller towns and cities. However, Virgin Mobile would need massive advertising money to cause a “brand recall”, just like they have associated a dog with Hutch. For the same reason, having for has not worked well because he endorses many other brands. Further, ’s marketing division is pits.

I feel that the PR divisions needs a better infusion of brains than the current crop of retards that presently infest them. They need to tone up their language primarily because flowery English doesnt work. Unless someone is looking at impressing some starry eyed nut.

By the way, their website designer is bcwebwise. It speaks very highly of it’s boss who is an ex journo and has ventured in web designing. It has jarring colours and as usual coding errors :) Not a very comforting thought to pay dollops of money to those who cant even ensure compliance to web standards.

Update: I got an email from their PR agency saying that the attachment was sent by mistake. They wanted to send a further email from their PR agency regarding the new development of licence norms. They wanted my telephone number in order to speak to me and clarify issues.

Incidentally, came with front page on 10/03/2008 in Delhi edition of . They are paying the customers to recieve incoming calls. In my opinion, this is basically a gimmick to lure in customers initally; their call rates are almost similar as that of other operators.

I shall keep this post updated as and when newer developments happen.

This post was before the DoT cleared the deal. I know about the MVNO status but this isn't mentioned anywhere in the website, nor in the reply from their PR division. As for being biased, this blog is being biased because it carries my own impression about the way things are folding up.

I have no clue about Tatas' "excellent" service parameters. I choose to rely on the verbal feedback from the customers. I dont use Tata either but it would be a surprise of all sorts indeed that people are actually checking out the service parameters.

Who said Virgin Mobile acts as MVNO..well, Abhishek u r WRONG!! get ur story right!!..DoT has cleared the deal btw TTSL and Vrgin Mobile. This was cleared earlier too but the GSM operators had formally complained with DoT claiming it was against regulations. MVNO, by definition means buying bulk airtime from opearator and reselling minutes as well as customer ownership. And this is apparently not the case with Virgin mobile, so I gz u stand corrected there

And now for dropped call rates and Network efficiency. TTSL is one of the best network reliability providers. And they were ranked poorly for the customer satisfaction qoutient and not in terms of their Network efficiency. Most of the KPIs fall within or exceed TRAI regulations. They are the only provider with add on subscribers every month, meaning the other operators are losing their overall percentage of customers where as TTSL is gaining them.

Abhishek, your article is quite biased and not in good spirits. Myself too do not use the TTSL but that does not mean they are bad providers. Make sure, you write artices that are fair with and impartisan attitude

i want virgin mobile but i dont have link.

Hi friends, I think this Virgin stuff is CDMA based. Can't they provide GSM services? I was a Hutch Dealer and was really happy with their services. But this fcuking Vodafone is sucking all the money from customer's pockets. I've stopped this recharging stuff just as you must have done if you were in my position. I'm just keeping the Vodafone sim as I can't find any connections that is really good. I thought Virgin mobile will be a good choice. But not now.

"" Please have a better attitude Priya.... You're really an Idiot to Show such attitudes in an open Forum...""

Abhishek, We expect more stuff from you...

Gosh Priya you sound like a maniac. I fail to understand the reason for your outburst. If you believe so much in your abilities and the ability of your company, then start a debate and try and argue with your propective customers. Probably you don't think too highly of Indian bloggers or the Internet as a mass media in India in general. If that's the case, then I believe you're the one who's been farting around.

Tata's network is pathetic. The only reason people keep it is for interstate commnunication in order to save roaming charges. I am yet to find any happy customer of Tata in the Punjab region. And you must back up your claims with proper proofs. The customer today is very alert and demands only the best. False claims will only lead to your company getting sued in the consumer courts.

I am from the bracket of your propective customers ("YOUTH") and nothing you guys offer interests me. Cheap quality overpriced cellphones. Call rates are nothing out of the ordinary. I guess I'll stick with Airtel.

And if you're so pissed, then you should've refrained from answering Dr. Abhishek's email itself. If your PR team did answer, then it must be ready to face more scrutiny. My advice to you is that just pray this incident doesn't reach the mainstream communication channels such as publications or news channels. Virgin's reputation got get screwed badly. You can probably rebrand your company as "F*cked" then.

Cheers.

The above comment comes from the "PR" rep from Virgin Mobile. I plan to highlight this in the blog post. Some people would go a long way to get abusive. She is so smart that she typed in her valid email!

who the hell do you think you are? Its one thing to be right about something and explain the "crap" offered by companies, but you, you think you are the guy that knows ALL. Tell me why the hell you are sitting in front of some computer and typin this "crap" then? The answer is coz no one will hire you with your load of crap. You are one of those people who dont know how to put things in perspective. You prefer to make issues personal and you dont want to see what others are tying to point you understand. You are one of those people in any organisation that is a liability coz all you do if fart around pretending like you know everything and do no work. Hopefully next time you will have something more substantial to say when u "crap" out a company. you build no authenticity to your case and thats visible from the first comment you have recvd.
