Tata Photon Plus: Open Letter to Tata Executive

This is in response to Tata Teleservices “executive” commenting on my blog on the previous post.

Dear Ms Sangeeta,

Thanks for not “influencing” my thoughts.

I understand that you work for the company that is part of the established oligopoly. I do accept your offer to show me a “demo” which in the real world conditions has no relevance per se.

A one time “burst” of speed or “lightening” fast downloads has no meaning unless your product throws up a consistent performance in real time. I should be aware of the customer service as well as the time taken for any complaint resolution. You should back it up with a responsive team to address the billing issues that may arise during the course of usage.

I find no indication that your Photon Plus would work on my Ubuntu Desktop since I don’t use Windows platform. Even if I have to get a demo, I have no clue whether it would work or not. Your company doesn’t bother to address the Linux users and I couldn’t find any information about the drivers that might be needed to “dial” in your network.

The average user has experienced speeds ranging from 3-70 kbps which is slower than a dial up. While this may depend on “various factors”, I don’t have reason to contest this claim. Reason is that it’s easier for you to claim the “network conditions” and if any one is signing up for the contract, then he/she is at your mercy.

The pre sales is usually very strong with a huge amount of advertisements and tall claims. The after sales, usually, drops to zilch. Nada. There is a resounding and deafening silence.

Interestingly, you chose to leave a comment; you should have emailed me your concern. But then, on a public forum, your company becomes the object of ridicule.

Last but not the least. What is the meaning of “fair usage policy” for “unlimited downloads”. Where the F*** has it come from? What is the meaning of unlimited downloads? If your company is charging a customer for the same, it is at the customers discretion to use the way he/she deems fit. If you feel that your network is liable to be “abused”, why not stick on to metered net access alone?

It is the “considered” decision of almost all the ISP’s to stick on to “fair usage” policies which flies in the face of fair access. Tomorrow, you would be happy to police the Internet to snoop on the websites a customer wishes, all in the name of state security! What gives you the moral right?

The spectrum is public property and you are just adding value to it. You don’t effectively own the spectrum in the sense that till the time your licensce expires, you are most welcome to make profits resulting thereof.

You too are most welcome to your opinion, hence.

    Tata photon sucks! They simply cannot provide the services. For a few days it may stay OK, but after that it will become horribly unreliable. Most likely they deliberately slow things down. A$$h0les.

    Here is my experience:
    2nd week of August: Purchased a Tata Photon USB card. The salessman promised me the world as to how they will come and make sure that the card works. The card did not work on my laptop. The support guy came and blamed it on the system – was rude and had this attitude “it’s a system problem…I can’t do anything. Sucks to be you!”
    3rd week of August: Still did not work. Got lots of calls from the support folks all trying to find out what the problem was.
    4th week of August: Still did not work. Switched to a different machine. Now it connects to the network but after 2 min, the card disconnects….at this point, I am SICK of this freaking card! Whenever I called them, they said “our tech support said that it was a problem with your system”
    1st week of Sept: got the bill for first month! At this point I haven’t been able to use the card even once.
    3rd week of Sept: Called the customer care to cancel the card. They tried to keep me as a customer, asked me to send them the payment. I did not want to shout at the poor customer support girl since she is probably working for minimum wage.

    Now that I have cancelled my Tata Photon card, I am HAPPY! I do not have to deal with these guys any more! What a scam!!!!!!!!!!
    Bottom line, “customer service” is still a foreign concept in our country. No one gives a damn.

    Hi everybody,
    I will suggest not to take this type of blundered internet connection which i feel from my four months experience.I am writing some of my experience.
    1.The avg speed is max 20 to 60 kbps even i am using HP pav4 1318tu.
    2.Customer care is giving very painful service,if you call them they may pick your phone after 20 to 35min or may disconnect your call .
    3.You never get any service after 10 pm only interim machine will talk with you.
    4.You did not get any suggestion or billing updation on mobile or mail id.
    I am logging my experience .

    TATA PHOTON SUCKS BIG TIME…….
    few years back I had TATA INDICOM broadband connection which was used only for phone calls using the land line phone they have provided since the internet speed was like 12 kbps hahaha…..despites many complaints no one took any action.

    NOW, this month I took a TATA PHOTON PLUS since it promises of giving 3.1 MBPS however the average speed I am getting is 56 KBPS….

    THEREFORE,

    TATA Sucks, Tata Photon, promising speed = 3.1 mbps, actual and average speed = 56 kbps

    We have passed the 60 year of independence, but still the business and the Business power centers have been taking advantage of the piety Indian customers. It is pathetic to know that the country with 1 billion people and the power houses of Indian business have been ruling the country along with the yesteryear politicians with their tartuffe behaviors and taking undue advantage of pity Indian consumers. If left alone they e could even have gulped the causes and concern of the many Indian people. They have understood the consumer behavior patterns of Indians and how vulnerable group are the Indian public in dealing with consumer protection and law system which is also controlled by them. Many of the companies have been cheating heavily on the Indian customers on the new technological front, the government and the public not concerned much since they too have piece of cake out of this. The control they can have on a individual life is exorbitant and literally so ready for extortion of money unethical for their selfish cynicism culture built on their companies employees to deal with the consumers. And the powerful extortionist built have been non other then that of females who have been employed because of their ability to easily lure the innocent public of their culture built among their counter part considering them as part of them with deity of faith in dealing with the people.Indians have always been prudent on many of the thoughts and walks of life.This tool of blandishment and selfish motives that have created instability and distrust among the Indians to behave erratically. The examples set by them have followed in many walk of life , take the service sectors like the industries,hospitals,banking,engineering service,education sectors. Even the influence and culture have been set among the great B schools who control the major stake in the business world. What you see is an example how the thumb impression politicians and the consumers who cannot understand the economic distribution of the business have been continuously duped by the bigger business houses. i.e how the big Indian stalwarts have been the example of people creating billions of rupees individually among the Forbes group creating a monopoly of services and without any ethical consideration. The distrust behaviors can already felt on some of the the noble profession e.g the health care to cheat people and even so to deal unethical. It has become obvious that the rich have been having shares in the company for the illness of the poor. That is the state of the Indian people and only god can help them. They have been taking advantage of the personal relation which have been built on the yester years by their ancestors. I hope one day the same business group perish and come to the roads. I hope by that days may of our public have the education and strength to deal with the frauds and unethical aspects that prevails and built of them on their day to day life.

    Hi,

    India has no future in broaband for the next 10 years or so. All the so called fast broadband connections modems including Reliance Netconnect+, Tata Photon Plus and many more in India have failed to provide the speed they promise. It is an official scam and fraud and department of telecom itself is part of it.

    All … when TATA or Reliance say that they support 3.1 Mbps etc etc,it means, that 3.1 Mbps is supported for one BTS (AccessPoint) and if there are 10 users connected to that same BTS, then, 3.1 Mbps is shared across all 10 users. This is how wireless n/w works.
    I work for a Telecomm company (not for TATA or Huwaei).
    So, don’t go by the advertisement (I guess 3.1 is the max speed suppored by EVDO on a 5 MHz spectrum) and expect the speed to be high.
    You may ask, then how does TATA advertise so when they can’t support it ? Answer is, in Theory they can support 3.1 Mbps per user, when he is the only user connected to that BTS and all the Radio/Wireless channels/slots are allocated to that user. Then he will definitely get 3.1 Mbps.
    Hope this clarifies.

    i really agree with Saran
    it really seems that the speed they advertise regarding the speed they provide(3.1 mbps)
    is distributed among the customer regarding the uses. They also promised regarding the downloading speed it says its downloading speed is up to 3 mb but it provide hardly 78kbps. And there is a new update from my side for the last three days its not working there customer care number of the allocated zone are also not working.They are really providing the speed aas it says”I GOT THE SPEED”

    Tata has no clue about supporting Linux users for its Photon Plus. Their customer care says that they support: Win XP, Win 7, Mac OS. Why did they not tell me that they do not support Linux before I bought the device and the connection.

    All Are cheats… They never give service… Instead of resolving issues their so customer service refuses out right to provide any seevice… All this is just a scam… To take more money.. These are the kind of people that spoil society and take advantage of our desire to buy their products… It is all because of lack of proper judicial system.. Untill we realise and rise companies will find india better and attractive for all the wrong reasons. And we will continue to be robbed..

    i got tata photon + on aug 15 2010, the maximum speed i saw is upto 60 kbps.. now it is dead slow upto 10 kbps on average and am using my mobile to browse my emails. Do not buy any device which promise upto 3.1 mbps (upto) is a matter od concern.
    i have few questions to TATA telecommunications,

    1) why the hell should i pay for sharing the bandwidth with other customers while am using 10kbps (only 99 permonth on mobile users but am paying 1100 bucks)
    2) if you cant provide service quit the business probably you have more other things to do to fool the people
    3) am not only blaming TATA all other HISPEED providers are cheating the customers in the similar or another fashion what is the government doing on this.
    4) if they dont have the signal coverage in my area why did they sell me their product.

    Hi All,

    I am an Ubuntu Linux user. I specifically asked the salesperson in the Tata Teleservices office in Bangalore for the model that is supported by Linux. This was provided. I figured out how to use the Photon+ on my Linux notebook (Toshiba L300). I use the Photon when I am at a location where there are no other methods of connectivity. Of course, I do not get the speeds promised by Tata. Also I don’t seem to be getting billed more than I should with the 750 tariff plan.

    Photon Plus sukks. Everybody has to know this…. They are a bunch of fukking theives…!!! I took plus data kard on feb and i got the full speed only on the first fukking month. I have been kalling these fools from MARCH… Everytime I was promised a different fukking thing and I went through stupid fukking technikal steps which never helped me. Today, JULY 24th 2011 a floor manager named UMESH told me that there is an outage problem at my place since march and it would be solved by August 15…. I’ve lost around 6,000 from MARCH. BEWARE OF THESE THIEVES. I was cheated, was never told bout this by any fukking person working there at the office. Guys, belive me, they just want our hard earned money. They will be cheating u till u guys buy the datakard and keep recharging. THROW THE DEVICE AND CHANGE. THEY ARE USELESS….!!!

    This is true Tata Photon Plus is not good as it claims in all its marketing comunication. As soon as you recharge you get good download speed like 60 to 80 kps (if you consider that’s pretty good in India’s case). However, within few minutes the speed keeps fluctuating drastically between 3 to 50 kbps. It’s a disaster, you get pains to see it will take days to download your movies and by the time you finish your 10 / 15 GB unlimited (con and pun intended by Tata guys) plan your 30 days time limit is up. It is better to use BSNL landline DSL connection for all your movie downloads. BSNL Home Brroadband unlimited package of Rs 750 per month is truly give 55 to 60 Kbps download speed consistently with very little fluctuations unlike Tata Photon. Also there is no limit on bandwith or dwonload. Unlimted means unlimted usage at consistent 55 Kbps speed which is probably the Best Value I have experienced in India. OK, sometimes the BSNL line is down like most ISPs experience. I use Tata only for roaming and checking my emails only when I make trips in remote areas. They are taking advantage of this.

    Photon plus … they change colors when u switch from post paid to prepaid. My bills were overriding as soon my pack gets over and my usage is random. so i decided to switch to prepaid.
    And  wait for the surprise they changed my speed from 3.1 Mbps to 400 Kbps. On talk with customer care is speed go below 256 Kbps then talk with us. 512 Kbps is minimum to be called broadband. So guys u r not buying broadband even.
