Clean up

The administrator had installed Livefyre; I decided to go along with. There seems to be no big deal as far as the commenting system is concerned; but a new system built from ground up definitely has some advantages. (although the debate on Quora seems to be inconclusive for new entrants).

I had been busy in debugging a new web site; we haven’t moved in yet to a new hosting but it would definitely be on my calling card. It has been a lot of hard work; generating ideas and writing in documentation.

The default has been changed; I found the older ones to be better in terms of utilization of the space. The previous was overdone; a Twitter widget to roll the latest news on was introduced for any unique visitors. However, since most of the readers are ill-informed, I decided to give up on that too.

There was an option to subscribe by email; this has been done away with that too. I had set up a simple MailChimp account (RSS2Email) but due to lack of any response, it doesn’t make any sense to utilize their free services. It’s a lovely service and once I have a regular volume of posts; I’d revert to it.

The tag cloud has been expanded. I had set up a plugin for “contextual posts” (i.e. similar) but it did not serve the purpose. The sociable plug in has also been trimmed for easier management without cluttering up the interface.

If you wish to keep abreast of any changes here, I strongly suggest following this up through RSS feeds. Email is a passe’ and RSS is truly the way to go.

Experimenting a bit more

I have just changed the site’s ; I guess the previous one was becoming too overwhelming for my own senses. This is welcome in it’s approach for being minimalist and pleasing.

Some more changes here

On the main page, I have set up a Widget; I was finding it difficult to load one from the official site. However, WP has tonnes of plug ins which helped me set it up in a jiffy.

Although I experimented with a different , but I stuck on the present option. It is much more “feature rich” in my opinion and generally works.

What I have done around this time is to integrate the tags and the posts in a more fundamental manner. It took some tweaking of Simple Tags plug in and Open Calais integration (via their key), which is the first step towards “”. The idea is to have a better search (from the tag clouds AND the database) as well as be relevant for the searches. I was keen to get a RSS aggregation enabled on the site but it wasn’t possible to do it effectively. Further, it would have just polluted the pages and the different posts so I gave up the idea.

What I love about the tags (and being able to apply it automatically) is the ability for “” and relevance. Although taxonomy is being deprecated in many blog posts, still it is far better than the keyword searches that search engines rely on. The obvious evolution is semantics and identification of contextual linkages for identification of content (instead of merely categorizing them) and this is first step towards that.

On the sidelines, I have emailed to regarding the update on the RTI application and hoping that there would be some traction on that count. I also hope that they would keep me in the loop and do the needful of bringing about at least some accountability in the sector.
